Advertising plays a pivotal role in helping to direct society’s attention toward endeavors, causes, and products and “The Greatest Movie Ever Sold” does a good job of giving a broad overview of just how much that advertising affects the average American citizens life. The movie takes viewers behind the scenes with Morgan Spurlock as he recruits brands to help sponsor his movie and with the conversations the movie tells of how marketing influences individual’s decisions. This could range from the color of the graphics to the texture, to the themes used in the design.

In the movie “The Greatest Movie Ever Sold” it tells of how different aspects of a graphic can affect the psyche of their audiences. The visual effects of the graphics involved in flyer making and design influence, which include aspects such as the color and texture are used to better connect with the audience. In one of the conversations the iconic picture of Jesus and the Passover feast is highlighted as it was a piece of art that if manipulated into a graphic design could stir emotions in the targeted audience. While rather vulgar, the conversation does highlight the importance that designers and marketing team have when it comes to making sure that their products capture the story that they want the audience to understand.

“The Greatest Movie Ever Sold” also allowed me to think of how marketing and branding influences students that are in college. High Point University is known for its branding strategies as they have HPU on many different clothing apparel and materials. This helps High Point University spread the word of the university through “word of mouth” and attract more interest in the school. I confess to owning High Point University clothing including HPU hoodies, cups, books, pens, scarfs, umbrellas, jackets, and more which highlights just how much universities want students to wear their branding products to help “spread the word”. This in turn draws more students to the school who are willing to pay and donors to the school who may be willing to donate or invest in the institution.

The “power” that comes with marketing, branding, and designing in order to influence the audiences psyche also comes with great responsibility and ethical care as discussed in the film. The entities, companies, or organizations that are designing the material should have some accountability for false information and other negative effects that is involved in the sharing of their message.

Overall, advertising and marketing strategies play critical roles in any organizations or entity’s that wants to accomplish spreading their message for a purpose because they are the tools that help to advance leaders agendas. Without the use of propaganda, branding, marketing, and sales, world leaders and CEOs would not be able to spread their word, attract their targeted audience’s attention, gain recognition, or even recruit members to their causes. The movie “The Greatest Movie Ever Sold” would not be able to have been made and no profit would come of it even if were to be made as the filming would not capture the imagination of the audience.
